Click on the links below for descriptions of volunteer opportunities:

Head Coach

  • Become a USA Lacrosse member (can request reimbursement for cost)
  • Complete Bronze level coaching, child abuse training, and background check through USA lacrosse
  • Optional: Officiating training in USA Lacrosse
  • Plan practices, plan lineups for game
  • Arrive on time to practices and games or communicate with assistant coach or another parent volunteer to cover your absences.
  • Communicate any issues with scheduling of practices or games to program director as early as possible
  • Submit roster to the Comet Cup and ensure all players complete waivers 
  • Timeline: Attend at least one school Open House in August, Open fields in Fall, coach meeting in November, season start (5/6: January; 3/4: February, K-2: March) through season end (May), Coach meeting in May 
  • Time required: lots!
  • Benefits: one child free registration in the program. A lot of time outdoors with your daughter!

Assistant Coach

  • Be a USA Lacrosse member (can request reimbursement for cost)
  • Complete Bronze level coaching, child abuse training, and background check through USA lacrosse
  • Optional: Officiating training in USA Lacrosse
  • Assist at practices and games (arrive on time, assure safety of players)
  •  Let Head Coach know if you will miss practice or game
  • Head Coach is responsible for keeping Assistant updated on practice plans and starting lineups, and teaching Assistant how to help 
  • Timeline: Attend a school Open House in August, Open fields in Fall, coach meeting in November, season start (5/6: January; 3/4: February, K-2: March) through season end (May), Coach meeting in May, 
  • Time required: lots!
  • Benefits: one child free registration in the program. A lot of time outdoors with your daughter!

Treasurer 

  • Track financials in Middies bank account 
  • Provide reimbursements for equipment orders and refunded signups 
  • Set up gym times (January & February) and pay FHSD & TOCA
  • Reserve fields (Riverside & Clear Creek) and pay Anderson Parks
  • Assist with fundraising
  • Renew insurance each year (free through USA Lacrosse; required for rentals)
  • Give financial report at the end of the season
  • Time required: 8-10 hours per year
  • Timeline: Throughout the year on your schedule; tends to be more in December/January when getting the program started and toward the end of the season (May) 
  • Benefits: You are a member of the Board and are invited to weigh in on program discussions and are the first to know when decisions are made.

Social Media/Website

  • Update Facebook with Open Field times, registration information, etc. 
  • Advertise on school FB pages as possible 
  • Respond to or forward FB questions to program director or coach as needed
  • Update information on website including registration link, camps for summers, adding sponsors, updating pictures, etc.
  • Timeline: These posts and updates can generally be done on the volunteer’s own time within 1-2 weeks of the request; occasionally a message may need to be sent on Facebook quickly (e.g. practice canceled)
  • Time required: 8-10 hours per year
  • Benefits: You are invited to weigh in on program discussions and are the first to know when decisions are made. 

Uniform manager

  • Collect uniforms in off season 
  • Inventory uniforms and note any replacements needed Sort uniforms by size
  • Bring all uniforms to February practice to hand out – record name of player with jersey number
  • Order dry-fit shirt for all players and give to coaches to hand out before first game
  • Timeline: Store uniforms between May and February. Can inventory on own time
  • Time required: 5-6 hours per year
  • Benefits: Your daughter gets the first choice of number and uniform size. Relatively low commitment; biggest part of the job is conducting an inventory once a year and can be done on the volunteer’s schedule. It is a HUGE help to the program!

Equipment Manager

Ball bags:

  • Collect from coaches & store for winter 
  • Throw out damaged balls 
  • Order more balls as needed & stock bags evenly for 3 teams (~150 total) 
  • Confirm there are cones in each bag – order more if needed.
  • Give to head coaches by first Open Field

Goalie equipment:

  • Collect from coaches & store for winter 
  • Wash goalie pads (in washing machine on cold; air dry) 
  • Wash inside of helmets w/soap & water or clorox wipes 
  • Let director know if equipment replacement is needed 

Miscellaneous items (stored in goalie bags): 

  • Check First Aid kits and restock as needed 
  • Maintain ~10 extra mouthguards per team 
  • Maintain ~3 extra pairs of goggles per team

School Parent 

  • Needed for Ayer, Maddux, Mercer, Sherwood, Summit & Wilson. Additional parents for local Catholic/private schools is a bonus!
  • Assist the program in getting a booth at your Elementary School’s Back To School Bash/Open House
  • Work at the table for at least part of the Back to School Bash, or assist program director in finding someone to work the booth.
  • Put advertisements in PTO emails for Open Fields and registration opening
  • Timeline: Set up Open House booth in June or July, attend Open House in August, emails to PTO in Fall
  • Time required: 4-5 hours per year (this includes 2 hours at the Open House)
  • Benefits: Help grow the sport of lacrosse at your elementary school!
